Dallas Sports Highlight of the Week: In a headline-grabbing week, the Dallas Mavericks continued to make waves in the NBA Draft over the course of the last two nights. The Mavs draft started with a reunion after the team selected Michigan’s Morez Johnson Jr. with the 9th overall pick before taking part in a four-team trade that netted them Spanish guard and 25th overall selection Sergio De Larrea. Add in day two picks of Virgina Tech forward Tobi Lawal and another draft day trade to acquire Russian guard Vsevolod Ishchenko, and you see the full picture of Dallas’ busy draft. Learn more about all of the Mavericks’ draft picks in this NBC 5 piece.
College Sports Report: A pair of major North Texas programs also played a big role in a busy week of basketball news. TCU named current Orlando Magic star and former Horned Frogs alumni Desmond Bane as the university’s new Chief Basketball Officer. In the role, Bane will serve as a special advisor to the program, a mentor for student athletes and a liaison to the NBA. On draft night, SMU also made some news after the New Orleans Pelicans selected Mustang guard Jaron Pierre Jr. with the 58th overall pick. Pierre Jr. averaged 17 points, nearly 5 rebounds and a steal per game for SMU on the way to an All-ACC Honorable Mention last season.
The Sports Story You Need to See: The NBA Draft was far from the only buzzworthy Mavs news this week. After leading Michigan to the National Championship this year, Dusty May has become Dallas’ new head coach! Learn more about May and his accomplishments across Michigan and Florida Atlantic in the Mavs’ announcement here.
What We’re Watching: While the NBA Draft is complete, it’s now time to take the draft day action to the ice.
